Why Is there a need for civil rights leaders?
By: Megan Quinn
What would have happened if there were no Civil Rights leaders? The whole world would be different! Civil rights has become one of the biggest laws ever. Many people in the olden days were against anything to do with other races. Having colored people engaging in everything we do has accomplished more than expected. Colored people thought it was unfair that they were they slaves, they couldn't go to school, they didn't have nice houses, and they did not have anything that white people had. Many peopled agreed on the matter, but because civil rights were so controversy it was very hard for some white people to understand. There were many civil right leaders that changed everything with just a glance, just silence, just disobedience. There was a need for civil rights leaders because freedom of speech, equality, and to have freedom from cruel and abusive treatment.
Freedom of speech was something in the world that no one really was allowed. The colored people lived miserable lives being abused, mistreated, and even spit at. Because they were so discriminated they had horrible names yelled at them when seen by a white person. They were so mistreated that speaking up for themselves would most of the time cause death. Civil rights leaders stood up for themselves, and started protests saying what they really thought, and what needed to happen. The leaders would train everyone in the “group” to handle the words being spoken, the slapping, the punching, etc. When they would go to protest they were fully prepared to have all those things happen. There were many incidents when protesting would risk your life every time. An incident such as Rosa Parks on the bus is a great example of how one of the ways this started. She was refusing to move out of her seat for a white man, and she stood up for herself. Freedom of speech states that it is a political right to allow ones opinion and ideas. For the colored people that law did not necessarily apply to them. Having the civil rights leaders changed this so that colored people were allowed to have freedom of speech. Having freedom of speech was just as important to the equality of colored and white people.
“Americans are so enamored of equality that they would rather be equal in slavery than unequal in freedom”- Alexis De Tocqueville. Equality was one of the biggest turning points in the Civil rights movement. Jim Crow law stated that there should be equality with white and colored people. He stated that different races can be separated but equal. With this change they had two schools, two bathrooms, and two diners, two of everything. With the schools the white peoples schools were placed in a nice neighborhood so with those people paying the taxes that was the better school. The black schools were placed in a bad neighborhood and had different people paying into that school and it was not good. Everything that the white people had the colored did also but not the same type of quality. An example of the equality was the Jim Crow laws; separate but equal. They said that as long as there were two schools, one for the colored and for the white then that was considered equal. The bad thing about that was in the black schools those people in the neighborhood were paying the taxes and in the white schools in the white neighborhoods those people were paying there taxes so in the end the white schools were a lot better. These were unfair to the people but they were more worried about the cruel and abusive treatment.
Freedom of cruel and abusive treatment was one of the most wanted things to change. One of the most horrible things that was done to the black people was the slavery. They were treated like animals, would be worked to death, and they would also be having to serve the white people and under no circumstances talk back. One of the main things they wanted to change was the slavery being illegal. The Ku Klux Klan was one of the most hateful group that was against black people. They would torture, burn, beat and kill the black people whenever they got a chance. Still to this day the KKK are involved in the worlds society without being caught. There was a huge problem with the freedom riders. They were riding through Alabama and the greyhound bus was stopped by a huge white mob and the bus was burnt down and the people on the bus were beaten very badly. The freedom riders were not allowed to fight back, talk back, or even talk to others during this situation. Civil rights leaders were needed especially during this time with the protests.
There was a massive need for Civil rights leaders because freedom of speech, equality, and to have freedom from cruel and abusive treatment. The many civil rights leaders will always be remembered for their strong acts of courage. Having these leaders was a great thing to happen in the world. We have changed everything so that equality is fair among, freedom of speech is allowed, and no longer are colored people having cruel and abusive treatment. Still to this day there are racist people that cannot stand the sight of colored people. Mostly because that is how they are raised. Civil rights leaders are a big part of why things are changing. We do not have many leaders today like that because today most things are resolved, but instead we have small protests of people in general who want to join there is not necessarily a leader. Civil rights leaders will always be known as the most bold, strong, and proud people in our country.
